Focus on research

Veterinary Science, Ghent University

The Veterinary School was founded in 1933 with the explicit support of Belgian Nobel prize winner and Ghent University professor Cornelius
Heymans. It was the first place where Belgian students could study veterinary medicine in Dutch. Research in this discipline has since then soared. Research topics range from pathology, toxicology, virology and parasitology over morphology to animal health and production, genetics and surgery.

Research in veterinary science is critical for the health and well-being of animals, including humans. Food safety, emerging infectious diseases, the development of new therapies, and the possibility of bioterrorism are examples of issues addressed by veterinary science that have an impact on both human and animal health.

Our researchers in veterinary science are dedicated to excellence in research, educational programs and professional service. They seek to advance understanding of both animal and human health, foster open collaboration across disciplines and institutional boundaries, and integrate discovery with application. They do this through their compassion and dedication to service at the state-of-the-art teaching hospital where they care for animals and help students hone their skills in real time, led by world-class faculty who are renowned board-certified specialists in their field. They pursue continued discoveries in both basic and applied sciences, creating new treatments and tests to enhance and protect public health throughout the world.
