Value Creation of Waste Sludge by extracting Alignates, Karel de Grote University College

Water is one of the most important commodities on this planet. It is used in large amounts in industrial as well as domestic settings. Contaminated water needs to be purified before it can be reused. The water treatment industry  - as part of the chemical industry - becomes more and more important. Most water treatment installations use activated sludge with bacteria that break down the organic material in the contaminated water and convert it into new sludge.

During this process the amount of sludge increases and therefore every now and then the sludge needs to be removed from the system. The excess sludge is a muddy substance, a waste stream that is dried and subsequently needs further processing, which is an expensive affair for water treatment companies.

The goal of this project is to add value to this muddy substance by extracting one of its valuable components: alginates. These are sugar-like molecules, exopolysaccharides, that can be used e.g. for treating paper surfaces. If these molecules can be extracted from excess sludge in an economically feasible way, the water treatment industry can lower the costs for sludge processing and moreover gain money from sale of alginates.
