Sport Science, Ghent University & Howest University College West Flanders

Ghent University - In 1908, the world’s first academic education on Physical Education was established at Ghent University. Now, the movement and sport scientists in Ghent are united in one department of more than 100 members. The department is known as a dynamic team with an excellent reputation in education and high-class scientific research. The research activities have recently grown to a high international standard. It is centered around five research topics: Biomechanics and motor control of Human Movement, Exercise Physiology and Sports nutrition, Sports Management, Physical Activity, Fitness and Health, and Sports Pedagogy. We have a group investigating the performance, training and learning of motor skills in daily life situations and sports. Research targets individuals of all ages and physical abilities and involves both laboratory and field testing. Another research team focuses on effectiveness as part of the professionalization trend in sport management and sport policy. In particular, all kinds of sport policy and sports organizations -facing pressure towards more professionalization and effectiveness- are studied but taking into account the specificity and values, e.g., ethical aspects, of the sports sector. The research unit of Exercise Physiology and Sports Nutrition performs research towards acute and chronic adaptations of the human body to exercise and sports. The available expertise spans the range between fundamental cellular physiology and applied sports physiology, equally including studies on experimental animal tissues as well as on the elite athlete.
The research infrastructure was recently boosted by a newly constructed 900m2 Movement and Sports Science Laboratory.

Howest University College West Flanders - The Living Lab Sports, Movement and Health is designed to test, develop and demonstrate new innovative products & services within the fields of personalised health care and smart systems – that, in a new & approachable way, encourage the consumer to move. These test, innovation and demonstration trajectories are set up on the unique Sports Innovation Campus (SIC) in Bruges and are followed up by a multidisciplinary team of experts from several research groups within Howest. In addition to the expertise in the field of Sports & Movement, this also includes research groups in fields such as digital and industrial (product) design, mobile gaming applications, applied informatics, occupational therapy or applied health sciences. The Living Lab builds bridges between companies & organisations; students, lecturers & work field partners and the end consumer focusing on practice-aimed applications within the market of approachable sports & movement activities. Thanks to the direct link with the consumer and manufacturer, the creative potential is better exploited and marketing is stimulated. In concrete terms, a new product/service within the movement hall community is thoroughly tested by several target groups after the development phase that is based on the principles of co-creation. To maximise the relevance of the output, consumers are professionally guided and coached during the test period. Thanks to the close involvement of at least one valorisation partner from the very start of the project, the valorisation is maximally supported. In addition, the SIC forms a unique hub for communicating the possibilities and for the dissemination of success stories.
