Focus on research

Royal Conservatory of Brussels, Erasmus University College Brussels

Practices are embedded in and constitute a culture. The search and research for how knowledge of and in artistic practices (more specifically music practices) is developed, acquired, transmitted and shared, is the focus of the research line KLAP (Knowing and Learning in Artistic Practices). An artist continuously merges praxis, knowledge and aesthetics. Artistic knowledge is at the same time embodied, sensorial, semiotic, cognitive, scientific, material and often non-verbal. Different researchers at the Conservatoire unveil both implicit (tacit) and explicit aspects of practices and the interactions between these. Koen Dries uncovers innovative ways, by confronting his artistic practice and performance of saxophone with existing research in physiology, signal processing, sports medicine, …. Philippe Lamouris investigates the transmission between composer and performer and the tacit and sensorial knowledge that transcends this relation. Chryssi Dimitriou analyses the sensorial magic that passes between what happens on stage and the reception by a public. Jan Michiels discovers in cartographies of the contexts of musical works a thread for the interpreter. Tom Decock explores the pedagogical force of documenting practices of contemporary music with technological aids. These are but some examples of artistic research related to KLAP on the complex interactions of different ways of knowing in artistic practice, learning and experience.
