Focus on research

Packaging Technology Center, Hasselt University

With modern characterization and testing techniques and a scientific interpretation of the research results, the Packaging Technology Center/imo-imomec carries out, since 1998, scientific services to industry according international standards. Focusses are:

  • Gas permeability for oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor and other non-corrosive/non-flammable gases. Materials and packages are measured with 16 specific modules. 3 test principles are applicable: equal pressure, different pressure and fluorescence method. Data of permeability research is an important aspect in quality preservation together with data of burst resistance and leaks of sealed packages.
  • Physical material analyses quantify properties of paper, cardboard and plastics. These characterize and evaluate the material as potential packaging material for a specific product. Important characteristics are: microscopic layer thickness, dart value, puncture resistance, tensile strength, compression and burst resistance.
  • The exposed impacts of handling, storage and different transportation modes (truck, plane, train) on packages or pallets can be simulated with transport simulation research (drop, compression and vibration). External recording of vibrations, shocks, temperature and RH can be done.
  • Effects of climate factors such as temperature, RH and light exposure (UV or daylight) can be verified in the various climate rooms during climatological studies.
  • Packaging diagnoses and optimalisation investigate material, package concept and process in companies with focus on innovation, prevention and sustainability by using test results, specific tools and relevant software, such eco-indicators, ArtiosCAD, Inventor and CAPE.

The academic fundamental research domain is oriented towards modification (nanotechnology, adding additives, blending,...) of (bio-)plastics with the aim of extra functionalizing including focus on improved biodegradation.

The more applied research in subsidized project studies on general packaging questions. Investigation on the effects of material, processing and design of thermoformed packages on gas permeability and the sealing performance of conductive sealing and ultrasonic sealing in relation to the integrity of packages are some examples.
