Focus on research

P-Wearables, PXL University College

The center of expertise Smart ICT is part of the research and services department of PXL University College, PXL-Research. Smart ICT focuses on the integration of emerging technologies in daily personal and professional life. Some topics include virtual reality, Internet of Things and drones. In the P-Wearables project, the core topic is the intelligent integration of programmable wearables, such as smart watches and smart glasses in daily personal and professional life. The project is funded by the Flemish Innovation Agency and a consortium of around 20 enterprises.

At the start of the project, the state of the art was determined, resulting in an extensive overview of commercially available smart watches and smart glasses. In the next phase, two large-scale demonstrators were built.

The first demonstrator focuses on the use of smart watches in home care and well-being. Used cases include heart rate monitoring, fall detection, wandering detection, medication reminders and task guidance.
In the second demonstrator the logistics sector is targeted, using smart glasses. First of all, employees are expected to be able to make fewer mistakes, operate hands-free, learn new procedures faster, mainly in order picking scenarios. Aspects such as proof of delivery, barcode scanning and product identification are also taken into account.

The project has a strong technology focus: how can these devices be coupled to an existing application (a mobile application or a warehouse management system), what about battery life and interoperability, …? Some non-technological aspects are also taken into account: privacy (both for the employee and for colleagues, customers), security, user friendliness and usability, social acceptance and market acceptance. For these aspects, a decision matrix is developed, making the choice of hard- and software easier, depending on the circumstances and usage requirements.
In the final phase of the project, the insights gathered from both large-scale demonstrators are evaluated in 4 small-scale pilot cases: business networking, security services, coaching and training on the job.
