Focus on research

Multiple Sclerose Research, Hasselt University

REVAL is performing research in the domain of rehabilitation sciences and physiotherapy for different pathological groups with as musculoskeletal, neurological, pediatric and cardiorespiratory indications. An important research line is focusing on persons with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS). Researchers investigate the value of innovative assessment and treatment methods to enhance physical fitness and functioning with the aim to improve health and quality of life.

Bert Op ‘t Eijnde is driving research on effects of exercise therapy on physical fitness and muscle strength as well as immunological and metabolic markers. His research is including both applications in animal disease models and human subjects. Peter Feys is driving research on the clinical assessment of motor fatigability, mobility, upper limb function and cognitive-motor interference during functional activities. He is leading multi-center joint data collection studies to identify effects of rehabilitation and markers of clinical meaningful change. Innovative treatment interventions are focused on robot and technology-assisted motor training programs, cognitive-motor dual versus single modality training and music-supported rehabilitation methods as entrainment and sonification. Raf Meesen is driving research on neurophysiologic aspects underlying cognitive and motor performance with applications in pwMS. Expertise is demonstrated with methods as TMS and tDCS. Veronica Popescu is bringing in expertise in neuro-imaging in pwMS.

Research is performed with collaboration with the MS Network Limburg, a partnership between UHasselt, PXL and the Rehabilitation and MS center in Overpelt. In the latter institution, Bart Van Wijmeersch is driving the medical clinical research in MS. Besides, collaborations are expanded to all Flemish MS centers as well as MS research & clinical centers abroad. UHasselt is present in the RIMS network, standing for the European network for best practice and research in MS Rehabilitation.
