Fashion and Textiles, University College Ghent & Ghent University

Ghent University - The Department of Textiles of Ghent University is a reference in the textile world at European and global level. Founded in 1929, early research focussed mainly on the mechanical properties of natural fibres, such as cotton and flax. When at the beginning of the eighties the Belgian textile industry had to cope with serious problems and restructuring, a new start was made with the textile education and research activities. The research activities are evolving more and more into fundamental research having a clear multidisciplinary character and introducing several new technologies. For example, research into advanced materials for niche applications, where the unique quality and functional properties of the material are decisive for success. The Department of Textiles focuses on the following research topics.

  • Nanotechnology
  • Artificial turf
  • Smart textiles
  • Functionalisation of textile materials
  • Polymer technology

The different groups cooperate with each other to develop new materials, new knowledge and scientific understanding in strong multidisciplinary research. They also work in close cooperation with various other research disciplines, including biomedical sciences, mathematical modelling, electronics, electrochemistry, sports science, medicine and many other.

The core business of the Fashion, Textile and Wood Technology department of HoGent is applications oriented research technology transfer to the industry. In all our work there is a strong focus on sustainability and mass customization. The department has numerous partners in Belgium and all over Europe. The FTI Lab (Fashion & Textiles Innovation Lab) has a track record in different research areas such as finishing, plasma treatment, UV coating, biotechnology, digital microdisposal of functionalities on textiles, 3D body scanning and modelling, fit adjustments for personalized products, digital printing, intelligent textiles, comfort optimization, etc. Current research projects include the development of adapted sportswear improving performance and recovery while minimizing the risk of injuries and a study of hemp as a sustainable alternative to cotton, pure and in blends. On the other hand our research in wood technology includes finishing of solid wood and engineered wood products, carpentry and automation of production processes. Current research includes plasma treatments on veneer products to improve durability. We have well-equipped laboratories for material testing and several pilot plants for producing prototypes and small lots.
The department also offers tailor made training courses for the textile, fashion and wood industries.
