Crew Resource Management in hospitals, Karel de Grote University College

A publication of the Institute of Medicine about patient safety notes that yearly in between 44 000 and 98 000 patients die in American hospitals because of medical mistakes. This number can be extrapolated to other industrialised countries. Because of this knowledge the attention for research on patient safety has increased. This has however not yet been translated to a safer patient care.

Recent research shows that the most eminent causes of medical mistakes are of non-technical nature, like communication and team work. For technical skills many guidelines have been developed. This is however not the case for non-technical skills. Particularly, emergencies demand fast, high-stakes decisions in stressful, complex and rapidly evolving situations, which make them susceptible to error. In the aviation sector, a similar high risks industry, Crew Resource Management was developed to optimise non-technical skills for cockpit staff, with very safe flights as a result. Research suggests similar training for health care professionals. Auspicious work has been done to implement CRM in operating theatre environments, trauma teams and obstetrics. However, studies on the development of a generic training for non-technical skills of interprofessional emergency teams in general are sparse.

In current research an evidence based CRM-training will be developed for non-technical skills for interprofessional emergency teams.
